Sensei Yagi - Meibukan Gojyu-Ryu Karate Master

Allow me to express my deepest and most sincere welcome to the International Meibu-Kan Gojyu-Ryu Karate-Do Association. Our door is “open to everybody”, so that anyone who wants to learn our style, even a single person, can join our karate family. Allow me to also convey some thoughts about Okinawan Karate and Meibu-Kan Karate.

While many people think and believe that Karate is a “fighting art”, Okinawan Karate has always been a “self defense art”. While some teachers in some parts of the world teach “how to fight”, we teach “how not to fight”. In case one is faced with an unavoidable fight others teach “how to win”, but we teach “how not to lose”. If you take a close look at each of our kata, you will realize that there is no one kata which can be characterized as an “attacking technique”. Each of the kata starts with a “blocking technique” first.

These facts speak about the karate heritage of Okinawa, from centuries ago to now. Let me share a wisdom imparted to us from GRAND MASTER MEITOKU YAGI when he said, “do not put your main purpose in mastering the Karate techniques themselves, you should instead study the way of life through Karate”. Remember that this is the final goal that we should all strive to reach.

Sincerely yours,
Meitatsu YAGI
